Our third Chamber Music at Bethany concert will consist of mostly French music that are also tied together by indigenous poetry. The texts in Ravel’s Chansons madécasses are taken from the eighteenth century Creole poet Evariste-Desire de Parny, and they express a cry for liberation from colonialism, exploitation, and slavery as they occurred in Madagascar. The text of Five Folk Songs by Hedges are well known English folk songs. The flutist from Eighth Blackbird, Nathalie Joachim, will share some songs of Haiti’s women from her recent project. The program will be augmented by other beautiful French music such as Debussy’s Cello Sonata and La Captive by Berlioz.
The musicians on this concert will include two member of the four-time Grammy award winning ensemble Eighth Blackbird and Emily Birsan, soprano, a Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Ryan Opera Center alumna and has been critically acclaimed for her performances at Boston Lyric Opera and Welsh National Opera.
Please come join us on Sunday May 6th at 2pm!
